Allied Health Insights Vol.3 No.10: Supporting Health Care Professionals Working At Top Of Scope To Thrive

In this edition of Allied Health Insights

  • Driven by the need to alleviate waiting list pressures and optimise patient care, a growing number of healthcare professionals are being placed in top of scope roles. This is not, in and of itself, ‘news’. COVID, the Strengthening Medicare Taskforce, and most recently the Scope of Practice Review, have kept the ‘top of scope’ discourse rolling along. As AHPA highlighted in its submission to the Australian Government’s Scope of Practice Review, health care practitioners can benefit from working at top of scope in a number of ways: reduced turnover in allied health professions who participate in more rewarding work; high likelihood of developing more advanced skills; increased quality of life and work/life balance for their medical colleagues.

What else do we need to consider? Susan Nancarrow responds this week with a raft of considerations to empower governing boards, and health leaders, to help ensure health professionals working at top of scope thrive, not just survive, within this repositioned workforce landscape.
